Mixed martial artist Nate Diaz made headlines over the weekend after footage emerged of him getting into a street brawl in New Orleans on Friday night. Diaz, a former UFC fighter, was caught on camera by bystanders choking out a man in what appears to be a fight involving YouTube personality Chase Demoor. (CBS Sports)
According to reports, Diaz had just attended a boxing event in the area when the altercation occurred. The video, which was shared on social media, shows Diaz wrapping his arm around the man’s neck and squeezing until he falls down unconscious. (Fox News)
Diaz’s opponent in the street fight was initially mistaken for popular YouTube star Logan Paul due to his resemblance to him. In a video released after the incident, Paul and his brother, Jake, mocked Diaz’s fighting style and claimed they would have been able to defend themselves better in a similar situation. Following the incident, Diaz received criticism from onlookers, including fellow MMA fighter Conor McGregor, who called the situation “shocking.” UFC President Dana White also shared his thoughts on the matter, stating that he had not yet spoken to Diaz but that the fighter was “not in trouble whatsoever.” (MMA News)
Despite the controversy surrounding his actions, Diaz appears unfazed. In an Instagram post on Sunday, he shared a photo of himself with the caption, “I’m just out here livin’.” (New York Post)
This is not the first time Diaz has made headlines outside of the octagon. The fighter has been open about his use of cannabis and was briefly suspended by the UFC in 2016 for testing positive for the drug. He has also been a vocal advocate for marijuana legalization. Diaz last fought in November 2019, losing to Jorge Masvidal in a highly anticipated bout. (Hindustan Times)
As of now, it is unclear if Diaz will face any legal repercussions for his involvement in the street fight.
