Parking garage collapse

Lower Manhattan, New York – On Tuesday afternoon, a parking garage located on Ann Street in Lower Manhattan partially collapsed, leaving one person dead and multiple individuals injured. According to the New York Fire Department, the accident took place in close proximity to city hall and the Brooklyn Bridge.

Reports from Pix 11 and ABC 7 indicate that the casualty was a worker at the parking garage, while The New York Times states that five others were injured. It is unclear if any were critically injured. People Magazine notes that at least four of the injured were hospitalized.

The garage was adjacent to a Pace University building and was reportedly five stories tall. It is not clear how much of the garage collapsed, but photos on Gothamist show a significant portion of the building exterior had fallen to the ground floor.

It remains unclear what led to the collapse, and it is still too early for inspectors or the fire department to make any determinations, according to NBC New York. However, speculation has arisen that building violations could have been a potential factor.

The incident is under investigation, and authorities are urging individuals to avoid the area.
