HBO’s hit series, Barry, premiered its fourth and final season on Sunday, and fans got to watch the titular hitman, Barry Berkman, behind bars (Rolling Stone). The show stars Bill Hader in the lead role, and despite its dark humor, has become a fan-favorite. In the season 4 premiere, Hader’s character is feeling the weight of his actions and doesn’t understand what he did wrong, according to Hader himself (Variety).
Fans of the show can expect a total of eight episodes in the final season (NME), with new episodes airing every Sunday (Men’s Health). To make the viewing process more convenient, subscribers can also stream the episodes on HBO or HBO Max (Tom’s Guide).
Season 4’s double bill — episodes 1 and 2 — received positive reviews, with Barry’s twisted and hilarious heart of darkness being charted, as well as the danger that comes with fame (Dexerto, Slash Film). The premiere episode, titled “Yikes,” saw Barry behind bars once again, and viewers are left to wonder if he’ll face jail or death in the end (The A.V. Club).
The show’s co-creator and writer, Alec Berg, spoke about the decision to end the show. He revealed that Hader had initially only signed on for three seasons but agreed to a fourth after some discussions (Men’s Health). Fans of Barry, however, understand that the show has covered everything it could in its four-season run and are looking forward to seeing how it all ends.
As Barry sets to bid farewell, it remains a benchmark in fresh and exciting storytelling thanks to its creators and lead actor’s creativity and hard work.
