Virginia Beach tornado – State of Emergency Declared as Tornado Damages 50-100 Homes in Virginia Beach

A local state of emergency has been declared in Virginia Beach, Virginia, as a tornado damaged 50 to 100 homes on Sunday night (WTKR). The Great Neck and River Road areas were severely affected, with the storm leaving behind a significant amount of damage (WAVY.com). Schools in the area have been closed due to the incident (CNN).

The National Weather Service has confirmed that the tornado that hit the Great Neck area of Virginia Beach was an EF-3 (WVEC). This classification means the tornado had estimated wind speeds of 136mph to 165mph, which resulted in the damage to residents’ houses and knocked down trees (WRIC).

City officials reported “major storm damage” as a result of the tornado, causing more than 2,000 utility customers to experience brief power outages(NBC News). Communities across the Virginia Beach area were working on the cleanup process on Monday (The New York Times).
