Peacock, the streaming service from NBCUniversal, has released a teaser for its upcoming show “Twisted Metal”, a live-action TV series based on the popular action video game of the same name (Variety). The trailer features Anthony Mackie, known for his role as Sam Wilson/Falcon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as one of the main cast members. According to TVLine, the show is set to premiere on July 27, 2023, on Peacock.
The series revolves around a rogue outsider named Sweet Tooth, played by Will Arnett, who is in search of a mysterious prize. However, Sweet Tooth is not alone, as he must also battle a group of other vehicles driven by other contestants who are just as eager to win the prize (Polygon).
The trailer is full of ’90s nostalgia, showcasing the action-packed, high-octane vehicular combat that fans have come to love from the video game series. Screen Rant notes that the trailer gives off vibes that are similar to the Mad Max franchise.
Despite the chaotic and violent nature of the game, Peacock has decided to take a more lighthearted approach to the show, making it a “comedy action” (Engadget). Twisted Metal has a history of satire and black humor, and Peacock aims to maintain that tone for the show.
The trailer also offers a sneak peek of the show’s interpretation of the iconic Sweet Tooth character. Sweet Tooth, who is a clown on ice cream truck wheels with a flaming head, is a fan favorite character from the video game series. His appearance in the trailer, with a live-action interpretation, is a significant moment for fans of the game (PC Gamer).
Twisted Metal has been in development since February 2022, when Peacock announced that it had picked up the project from PlayStation Productions (VGC). With the release of the trailer, fans of the game can finally see the live-action adaptation in action. Get ready to take the highway to hell with Sweet Tooth and the rest of the “Twisted Metal” crew on July 27, 2023, only on Peacock.
