Bryan Bresee

The 2023 NFL Draft featured a standout player from Clemson University named Bryan Bresee, who was ultimately selected by the New Orleans Saints as their first-round pick. Bresee, a defensive tackle, was given an “A” grade for his performance by Touchdown Wire, who praised his ability to disrupt opponents’ offensive lines (Saints Wire). While many fans may not be familiar with Bresee, there are several things worth noting about him.

One is the strong emotional connection he has to his younger sister, Ella, who passed away in September 2022 from brain cancer. Bresee has said that he will carry her memory with him as he takes on the challenge of playing in the NFL (Greenville Online). Another unique aspect of Bresee’s journey is the adversity he faced before even reaching the college level. Growing up, he had to overcome a speech impediment and work incredibly hard to excel in his academics and athletics (Hindustan Times).

The Saints’ drafting of Bresee has generated both praise and scrutiny from football experts who have weighed in on the decision. Canal Street Chronicles noted that the Saints were eager to add to their defensive line, which Bresee will undoubtedly strengthen. However, Greenville Online also pointed out that there are potential “cons” to the pick, such as Bresee’s injury history and an overall lack of experience playing at the professional level.

Despite the mixed opinions, Saints head coach Dennis Allen has spoken highly of Bresee’s talent and potential. Allen called Bresee an “exceptional talent” and expressed confidence in his ability to contribute to the team from day one (Saints Wire). The Saints’ selection of Bresee also became notable for another reason: the team used a first-round pick originally belonging to the San Francisco 49ers to draft him (Niners Wire).

As Bresee embarks on his NFL career, he will undoubtedly face many challenges and opportunities to prove himself. However, he has already shown a remarkable amount of resilience and drive in getting to where he is today. Whether or not he will live up to expectations remains to be seen, but his dedication to his craft and his love for his late sister are qualities that will undoubtedly make him a fan favorite among Saints supporters.
