In recent news, the US Supreme Court has been at the center of several controversial issues. One of the most recent concerns abortion rights, as the court blocked restrictions on abortion pills (CNN). This move is seen as a victory for the abortion rights community and the Biden administration (CNN). The Supreme Court issued a ruling to protect access to a widely used abortion drug by freezing previous lower-court rulings which had placed restrictions on it (NBC News). The decision is a temporary one, and the court is facing a Friday deadline for a critical abortion case that could shape the future of American healthcare and abortion access (CNN).
Aside from abortion rights, concerns have arisen over Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. Democratic allegations suggest that Thomas failed to disclose trips and gifts paid for by a billionaire (NBC News). These concerns have been sent to a judicial panel for further investigation.
In addition, the absence of Senator Dianne Feinstein has become an issue. Because of her absence, there is currently no push for Supreme Court Chief Thomas Testimony. When asked if he will subpoena John Roberts over allegations against Thomas, the Senate Judiciary Chair responded, “I don’t have a majority” (The Guardian).
Despite these controversies, the Supreme Court has also made decisions in favor of the public, such as the ruling to preserve access to the abortion pill mifepristone, for now, after a federal judge in Texas had limited its use (CNN). The court temporarily extended access to the abortion drug and set a Friday night deadline (CNN). The drug will remain widely available as the justices extended their deadline to decide whether or not to uphold the FDA’s approval of it (The New York Times).
