Día de la Tierra

As the world celebrates Día de la Tierra (Earth Day) on April 22, countries across the globe are taking steps to address issues such as climate change, pollution, and deforestation. The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970 in the United States, and since then, it has become a global phenomenon that brings together individuals and organizations to show their commitment to protecting the planet.

In India, the focus this year is on cleaning up the country’s rivers and lakes. The government has launched a program called “Namami Gange” which aims to clean up the Ganges and other major rivers in the country (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Namami_Gange_Project). Meanwhile, in Mexico, the day is being celebrated with a series of events and activities that promote sustainable living (https://www.gob.mx/cms/uploads/attachment/file/572283/BOLETIN_DE_PRENSA_DIA_DE_LA_TIERRA_2021.pdf).

In the United States, President Biden has invited 40 world leaders to a virtual summit on climate change on the occasion of Earth Day (https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2021/03/26/president-biden-invites-40-world-leaders-to-leaders-summit-on-climate/). The country has also announced its plan to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030 (https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2021/04/22/fact-sheet-biden-administration-sets-2030-greenhouse-gas-pollution-reduction-targets-net-zero-emissions-economic-growth-and-community-resilience/).

In Nigeria, the theme for this year’s Earth Day is “Restore Our Earth” (https://guardian.ng/news/earth-day-2021-nlc-harp-on-investment-in-renewable-energy-to-save-environment/). The country has been grappling with environmental issues such as deforestation, desertification and pollution, and there is a growing need to take action to protect the country’s natural resources.

As the world faces the challenge of climate change, it is important to remember that small actions can have a big impact. From using public transport to reducing plastic consumption, there are many ways in which individuals can contribute to protecting the planet. Día de la Tierra serves as a reminder of our responsibility towards the environment and the urgent need to take action for a sustainable future.
