Joel Embiid, the 7-foot, 280-pound center for the Philadelphia 76ers, has been making headlines lately. In last night’s game against the Brooklyn Nets, Embiid suffered a back injury that briefly took him out of the game, but he quickly returned to the court (Sports Illustrated). Despite the injury, Embiid played a strong game and helped the 76ers take a commanding 3-0 series lead over the Nets (Philadelphia Inquirer).
Aside from his injury, Embiid’s ball-handling skills have been garnering attention as well. The New York Times reports that Embiid can dribble like a guard, making him one of the best big men in the NBA. And while Embiid was not at his best last night, the Philadelphia team pulled through thanks to the strong play of Tyrese Maxey (Bleacher Report).
However, Embiid’s temper got the best of him during last night’s game when he received a flagrant foul for kicking Nets player Nic Claxton. James Harden was also ejected for a foul in the same game (USA Today). Confusion ensued among fans and media over the lack of punishment for Embiid’s kick, which some compare to Draymond Green’s infamous kick in 2016 (SFGATE).
Embiid’s performance and status will continue to be closely watched as the 76ers advance in the playoffs.
